dRC Needs Assessment Survey

The disAbility Resource Center (dRC), a duly incorporated nonprofit organization in the state of South Carolina, is grounded in the philosophy of independent living and is dedicated to the empowerment of people of all ages and with all types of disabilities to live independently and fully integrated into community life and work.  To that end, dRC will offer community-based programs that foster self-determination and support to enable community members to advocate for themselves and to serve as advocates and peer counselors for others.  The center is operated by individuals with disabilities and is consumer-controlled.  Advice will be based on real life experiences of people who have been there.

Basic principles for the disAbility Resource Center:

  • Consumer-controlled, cross disability, community-based, not-for-profit corporation which is nonresidential;
  • Offers four core services:  advocacy (systems and individual), peer support, independent living skills training, and information and referral;
  • Majority of governing board and staff are individuals with disabilities;
  • Committed to the inclusion of cultural and ethnic populations;
  • Ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act;
  • Focus on issues related to affordable, accessible housing, transportation, employment, education, health care, emergency preparedness and recovery, financial management, and finding resources for home modification and wheelchair ramps;
  • Operate a durable medical equipment loan closet;
  • Collaborate with other organizations, churches, government agencies, educational institutions, and other groups to promote full participation and equal access for people with disabilities.
